Nestled in the heart of the Andes Mountains and close to the Argentine border, Los Caracoles—also known as &#8220;The Snail Road&#8221;—is a famed section of International Route 60 (Ruta 60). This winding road connects the Chilean city of Los Andes to the Libertadores border crossing, leading to Mendoza, Argentina. The Cristo Redentor Tunnel, which connects Chile and Argentina at an altitude of more than 3,200 meters, often closes during winter due to snowfalls and rockslides. The tunnel itself stretches 3,080 meters, with 1,564 meters on the Chilean side and 1,516 meters on the Argentine side, and was inaugurated in 1980. However, winter conditions frequently force its closure, adding to the road’s infamy.
